Improve your cognitive control and mental focus with ReflexLab's mobile Stroop test.
The Stroop test is a classic psychological demonstration of cognitive interference. It occurs when you are asked to identify a physical property (like the color of a word) that conflicts with the meaning of the word itself.
Because reading is an automatic process for most adults, your brain instinctively reads the text before it can process the ink color. To succeed, your prefrontal cortex must actively suppress (inhibit) the automatic reading impulse to focus on the secondary task of color naming.
Cognitive inhibition is the ability to ignore irrelevant stimuli and stay focused on a specific task. It's a key part of "executive function" – the set of mental skills that include working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control.
Practise a Stroop task often enough and you will get measurably better at that task — your scores climb as you learn its rhythm. Whether that carries over to focus in daily life is genuinely unsettled in the research, so we make no promises about it. In ReflexLab, we add extra layers of difficulty with changing fonts and random text casing to further push your processing limits.
Your tier is set by accuracy — correct taps as a share of every moment you should have acted. Separately, the global leaderboard ranks you by an Adjusted Score (average correct reaction time, plus penalties for wrong taps and misses), so the tier rewards being clean and the board also rewards being fast.
Our mobile-optimized Stroop mode runs for 15 seconds. Color words appear one by one. You must TAP only when the name of the word matches its ink color, and WAIT when they don't. The game gets faster as the timer counts down, requiring intense focus to avoid the '3 wrong taps' early exit rule.
